Sun Prairie West is sending singles players Milena Halberg and Mya Mommaerts and the doubles team of Tess Halberg and Tea Schmoldt to state.

Senior Milena Halberg and junior Mya Mommaerts have experience with state qualification. They earned a berth together in 2024 as a doubles pairing. Last fall, both made it individually for the singles tournament. The same thing rang true this year as both qualified as singles.

Sun Prairie West junior Mya Mommaerts qualified for the 2026 WIAA individual singles state tournament by winning the No. 2 singles bracket at sectionals.

Sun Prairie West served as the host school for both subsectionals and sectionals. Subsectionals were hosted at the high school on Monday, Oct. 5. West was the host only in name for sectionals on Thursday, Oct. 8 as the event took place at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Mommaerts earned her state qualification by winning the No. 2 singles bracket, the same way she did the previous season. She was understandably the No. 1 seed for her bracket and backed that billing up by sweeping her first subsectional match 6-0, 6-0. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 win over the No. 4 seed from Madison East.

Path to state

This pushed her to Thursday's sectional semifinals. There, Mommaerts swept again as she scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over a Reedsburg opponent. On to the championship match, Mommaerts punched her state ticket with a 6-2, 6-3 win over a Middleton opponent.

Halberg snuck into the state field with a fourth place finish at sectionals, the final automatic qualifier spot. She entered subsectionals as the No. 1 seed, as well, and swept a Sun Prairie East opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Sun Prairie West senior Milena Halberg qualified for the 2026 WIAA individual singles state tournament by placing fourth in the No. 1 singles bracket at sectionals

This advanced her to sectionals for the quarterfinals. She swept a Reedsburg opponent 6-0, 6-0 before suffering an injury just as she had in the previous week's conference meet. Still, semifinal qualification guaranteed her state spot as one of four athletes remaining.

Sun Prairie West also qualified the doubles pairing of senior Tea Schmoldt and junior Tess Halberg. They lost their opening match in subsectionals to a DeForest pair, 6-2, 6-2. This is also a state return for Halberg, who made it within a doubles pair last fall.

Brackets and seedings have been released for the upcoming 2026 individual state tournament, which is scheduled at Nielsen Tennis Stadium from Thursday, Oct. 15 through Saturday, Oct. 17.

Halberg is seeded 10th in the state in the singles bracket. Her journey begins against Manitowoc Lincoln freshman Ava Wetenkamp at 11:45 AM on Thursday. Mommaerts will start a bit earlier at 10:30 AM against Hudson senior Laney Hanson. The doubles pairing of Halberg/Schmoldt will face a Middleton duo at 2 PM.
